Serenity: A History of Eastern Coronets

In the beginning there were kings and queens, princes and princesses, dukes and knights. That’s it. Those were all the titles that the society reserved. All other titles were at the discretion of the kings and queens. That is why there is in the West a “court” marquis, and in the East a “court” count.
Later, nearly all titles were reserved. Duchesses were recognized, and the full system of royal titles was installed. Below the duchy rank was added the county rank. Below that was the viscounty. Titles were given retroactively to those who had served as royalty and not yet received titles.
Thirty times in the East a fighter has won crown tournament, served as king, and earned the county rank by right of arms. One of those, Viktor, has resigned the rank. Half of those former kings went on to be king again and achieve the duchy rank. Six went to other lands to do this, and nine won the crown of the East a second time. One man, Count Ronald Wilmot, came to the East already a count and earned his duchy.
In all, the East has made ten dukes by right of arms and thirty counts by right of arms. They have also made thirty viscounts and viscountesses by right of arms. Really. You could look it up.
On Sunday, July 6, 1969 the Wilmot Principality held its first (and only) coronet list under the auspices of the East. The reigning royalty could not make the trip to Wisconsin, so they sent Adrienne of Toledo as their representative. Adrienne had served as first Queen of the East but countesses were not recognized yet.
The list was won by Keriadoc of Mauritania who defeated Michael the Bradley in the finals. No broadswords were used in the tourney, only short swords and great swords. After, Keriadoc and Diana were declared Prince and Princess Under the Hill.
Soon Prince Keriadoc travelled to the east coast to learn more about the Society and its rules. I don’t know how, and I don’t know why, but it was decided shortly thereafter that the Wilmot Principality should become the Middle Kingdom. Keriadoc and Diana were crowned as the first King and Queen.
So it was that the first principality of the East (and of the Society) graduated to kingdom without producing any viscounts or viscountesses. In June 1970 Atenveldt produced the society’s first viscount and viscountess.
In the reign of King Laeghaire and Queen Ysabeau (probably February or March of 1977) the first coronet tournament of Atlantia was held. Six people declared for the list. Graf Alaric defeated King Laeghaire in the finals.
The second Atlantean coronet had more fighters, probably eight to twelve. Earl Laeghaire beat Tnek the Ainesesstor in the finals. The third coronet was won by Michael of Bedford. He beat Tojenareum in the finals.
Bryetor also beat Tojenareum in the finals of the fourth coronet. Tojenareum defeated Njorbjorn in the finals of the fifth coronet. Ragnarr defeated Wulf Sagan von Osteirsee in the sixth coronet.
Count Bertrand defeated Richard Corwin in the seventh coronet. It was during Prince Bertrand’s reign that the first Prince and Princess of Drachenwald were invested on June 21, 1980.
In the eighth and last Atlantean coronet, Viscount Bryetor won again. He defeated the late Bran ap Powell in the finals. Prince Bryetor held the first Atlantean Crown Tournament which was won by King Michael (of Bedford who was then King of the East).
Because Drachenwald is geographically isolated from us, it is more difficult to get their history. There are twenty Drachenwald viscounts and viscountesses by right of arms. Raim y Hynnddyll won the fifth and ninth coronets of Drachenwald. Ivar Corwin and Kathleen O’Donnelly were denied royal titles. Prince Morgan and Princess Alienor are the twenty third monarchs.
The only viscountess by right of arms in the East is Gwenllhian. After coming in second in the fifteenth coronet, she won the sixteenth.
And finally, on December 2, 1989, Tarbold and Cainder were invested as first Prince and Princess of Aethelmearc. There are, so far, three Aethelmearc viscounts by right of arms. Seven from Atlanta, twenty from Drachenwald, three from Aethelmearc. Thirty viscounts and viscountesses by right of arms. Really. You could look it up.
